Review of the year

September:

Induction week saw year 1 take part in a Cinema Visit to see anti-apartheid sci-fi film District Nine. This lead to discussion later about racism, exclusion, bullying, levels of acceptability etc.

The students were also taken on a walk around the city to to stop every 10 minutes and visually record their respnse to the landscape - these were later used to create a set if icons. There were also visits to IKON gallery and BMAG to see the Matthew Boulton Exhibition, which informed a later project to design a set of coins about Birmingham, and the ColourSplash exhibition was also really inspirational, followed up with tasks on colour theory.

Year 2 induction involved camouflage. Prizes were given out for the most successful designs from the summer brief and the students were sent out into the city to hide their camouflaged objects and photograph them disguised.

Trip to Liverpool

Years 1 and 2 went to Liverpool coming to the end of its European City of Culture status. The trip was to pick up on the ambience of Liverpool and Beatlesmania to inform alternative map and album cover briefs. Students visited the Tate Liverpool and were particularly impressed by the sculpture on display including pieces by Julian Opie, Salvador Dali and Jeff Koons. Michael Craig Martin had curated an exhibition and provided a wall-sized mural of everyday objects. After absorbing the atmosphere in Matthew Street and the Cavern, the students visited the World Museum to see the Beat Goes On exhibition to research music and album artwork.

October

Yr 2 students Rashida Rashid and Adam Islaam went on a FEED magazine assignment to interview the owner of Oldies Records in Wolverhampton about the role of vinyl in today’s digital obsessed world.

Careers Advisor June Hunt gave her first talk about UCAS – the application process began!

November

Yellow Week – Clothes Show Live

Year 2 students collaborated with ND Fashion 1 to work in creative teams of 6 to pitch for the design of the college’s exhibition stand for Clothes Show Live at the NEC. As well as designing the exhibition graphics, the student shad to design the layout and even consider furniture and furnishings as well as the flooring. They had to manage a budget and ensure their pitch was affordable. The teams also had to pitch for the promotional literature to be issued at the show. Orain McNaught, Reiss Crookes, Liam Nolan, Ian Roberts and Jatinder Sagoo were the successful students who saw their designs go on display to 200,000 people over 6 days.

Children in Need

Yr 1 and 2 students worked in teams and collected over £400 in 1p and 2 p coins to create coin sculptures inspired by designer Stefan Sagmeister. Yr 1’s theme was pixel art, feeding into their current brief and yr 2’s was Pudsey does Bhangra to reflect the theme of the BBC’s event. These sculptures went on display in the FEED studio on the night Millennium Point hosted the BBC live broadcast.

Coventry Transport Museum

Year 2 Graphic Design students visited Coventry Transport Museum for an afternoon visit. The purpose of the visit was to collect research for their Transportation themed font design brief.

December

World Aids day. Year 1 and 2 came together for a joint tutorial to increase their understanding and dispel the myths about HIV and Aids. They undertook a quiz to see how much they knew on the subject, with a lot of students surprised at their prior miscomprehensions of the disease. They then worked on a 1 hour brief in mixed pairs of first and second years to design an awareness-raising poster.

Year 1 visited BMAG again to see the Bridget Riley expo to inform further tasks based on illusion and colour theory.

January

Yellow Week 2 – Birmingham’s Type DNA

Professor Caroline Archer led the year 2 students on a 1 week brief to photograph, research and respond to the plethora of type styles both historic and contemporary that have evolved with the city. The students had to work in small teams to produce a 3D type sculpture communicating a word significant to the graphic DNA of the city.

Jonathan Barnbrook

Internationally renowned designer Barnbrook came in to deliver an inspirational FEED night, but beforehand in the afternoon, he led a group of students from ND year 2 and HND to Birmingham’s Catholic Cathedral to explore the diverse and historic typography on display, including a sculpture by Eric Gill. He later explained in his seminar how he draws inspiration from such visits when creating new typefaces, and demonstrated the importance of independent primary research.

March

The first university interviews arrive for year 2 students. Successful students received offers for universities including Bournemouth Institute, UCA Epsom, London College of Communication, Central St Martins, Portsmouth and Leeds Met, as well as a range of local universities: Nottingham Rent, Coventry, Staffs, BCU and Derby. The students are going onto a wide range of subjects including Graphic Design, Animation, 3D Character development, Illustration, Architecture and Animation for Computer Games Design. A number of our best students have opted to progress onto our own HND in Graphic Design at FEED.

Yellow Week 3

Graphics 1 and 2 came together with Computer Games Design students from James Watt campus for an intensive week devoted to illustration. With the help of guest illustrators and our very own Director Mukesh Kumar, the week saw the learners create character designs, draw hens as they roamed around the studio (chicken FEED – sorry!) and create life drawings; culminating in a live face off between teams to create a time-limited hand-rendered illustration in response to a theme – inspired by German collaborative Klub7. Each student had 2 minutes to add to the illustration before swapping with another member of the team.

Make FEED night. An inspirational talk by Paul Scott about Make architectural firm based at the Mailbox was attended by year 1 and 2 students. They were inspired to hear how art and architecture can cross over and the importance of ethical and environmentally aware design in architecture.
